International Congress on European national languages in the field of education

Grammars, school texts and linguistic attitudes (Europe, 18th and 19th centuries)

_________________________

Palma (Balearic Islands), September 29th-30th 2022

(PRD2018/03)

Objectives

The main objective of this congress is to analyze the school and didactic works (grammars, catechisms, etc.) used in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries, mainly in Catalan territories, and in relation to the languages that coexist there (Latin, Spanish and French).

The management of languages in contact in the context of the creation and consolidation of the nation-states in the school environment has produced a historiographical discourse on these languages.

The analysis from the perspective of the internal linguistics of the texts for school use, and the study of the present discursive ideologies are the two objectives of the congress.

At the same time, the aim is to focus on the analysis of linguistic attitudes in different linguistic territories: Catalan, Spanish, French and German.

Language contact

Based on the situation of the linguistic contact that takes place in the European classrooms, in which in some cases Latin, the local language and the language of imposition coexist, the congress wants to review the historiographical discourse that this contact produced, the linguistic attitudes that were reflected in it and, fundamentally, the works or teaching texts that were disseminated.
